How to Use the Quilt Backing Calculator
Enter quilt width and height, overhang on every side and usable fabric width. The defaults assume 4 inches of overhang and 42 inches of usable width. Choose vertical or horizontal full-width panels, enter the seam allowance on each joined edge (optional; blank means zero), and choose a yardage purchase increment. Confirm your finishing or quilting requirements before cutting.
Formula and Explanation
Required backing width = quilt width + 2 × overhang Required backing height = quilt height + 2 × overhang Joined coverage across n panels = n × usable width − 2 × seam × (n − 1) If more than one panel is needed: n = ceil((required across dimension − 2 × seam) ÷ (usable width − 2 × seam)) Total fabric length = panel count × cut length per panel Yards = total length in inches ÷ 36; round purchase up to chosen increment
Vertical panels run the required backing height; horizontal panels run the required backing width. Each join consumes a seam allowance from both participating edges. Seam consumption reduces the dimension across joined panels, not their cut length. The panel estimate uses full-width strips cut sequentially from the bolt, then trims surplus across the assembled backing.
The overhang and seam defaults are explicit planning assumptions, not universal longarm or finishing requirements. This plan excludes shrinkage, pattern matching, directional prints, centered motifs, pieced scraps, diagonal joins and complex panel combinations. Usable width should already exclude selvages. Purchase rounding is not an additional shrinkage allowance. Confirm the cutting plan with your actual fabric and quilting method.
Worked Example
For a 60 × 80 inch quilt with 4 inches of overhang per side, backing must be 68 × 88 inches. With 42-inch usable fabric and ½-inch seams, two vertical panels cover 42 + 42 − 1 = 83 inches across. Cut two lengths of 88 inches: 176 inches = 4.8889 yards, rounded up to 5 yards in ¼-yard increments. Horizontal panels need three 68-inch cuts: 204 inches = 5.6667 yards, rounded up to 5.75 yards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can seam allowance increase the panel count?
Each join removes twice the entered allowance from combined panel width. Two 42-inch panels joined with ½-inch allowances cover 83 inches rather than 84. A backing wider than 83 inches then needs another full-width panel in this model.
What is the difference between vertical and horizontal panels?
Vertical panels are cut to the required backing height and joined side by side. Horizontal panels are cut to the required backing width and stacked. The two layouts can require different counts and yardages.
Is 4 inches of overhang always enough?
No. It is an editable example on each side. Your quilting equipment, finishing method or service provider may require a different amount.
Does the purchase yardage include shrinkage or matching prints?
No. It rounds the calculated total cut length upward to the chosen selling increment. Add any separately required shrinkage or pattern-matching allowance before ordering; complex piecing is not optimized.
