How to Use the Cross Stitch Size Calculator
Enter whole pattern width and height in stitches. For Aida, choose 11, 14, 16, 18 or a custom stitch count and stitch over one. For evenweave or linen, enter threads per inch and choose over one or two. Add the same optional margin to each side in inches or centimeters, then copy the results.
Formula and Explanation
Design inches = pattern stitches × threads crossed per stitch ÷ fabric count Fabric-cut width = design width + 2 × margin Fabric-cut height = design height + 2 × margin Centimeters = inches × 2.54
Aida count describes blocks/stitches per inch, so its usual over-one calculation is stitches divided by count. Evenweave/linen count refers to fabric threads per inch: working over two doubles the dimensions compared with over one. Margin is added to both opposite edges, not once to the entire dimension. Changing the margin unit converts the entered margin.
Actual fabric count, tension, washing and technique can change finished size. These are unrounded minimum dimensions for planning; round fabric purchases upward as appropriate and add extra allowance for framing or finishing. This does not estimate floss, stitch time, shrinkage or pattern licensing.
Worked Example
A 140 × 196 stitch design on 14-count Aida is 10 × 14 inches, or 25.4 × 35.56 cm. With a 3-inch margin on each side, cut at least 16 × 20 inches, or 40.64 × 50.8 cm. The same design on 28-thread evenweave worked over two has the same dimensions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does fabric count mean?
For Aida it is typically the number of stitch blocks per inch. For linen and evenweave it is the number of fabric threads per inch, so the number of threads crossed per stitch also matters.
Is 28-count over two equivalent to 14-count Aida?
For size, yes: 28 threads per inch divided by two threads per stitch gives 14 stitches per inch. Fabric appearance and stitching technique can still differ.
Is the margin added once or twice?
Twice to each dimension, because it is allowed on both sides. A 10-inch design plus 3 inches on its left and right needs a 16-inch fabric width.
Are the results a guaranteed final size?
No. Fabric and stitching vary. Measure your actual fabric and allow for washing, finishing and framing before making the final cut.
