How to Use the Wedding Budget Calculator
Enter a total budget, choose a currency label and optionally set aside a contingency amount. Edit estimated and actual costs across the nine starting categories, and add or remove custom categories as needed. Leave actual costs blank when unknown; enter zero only when you have confirmed no cost. All amounts use the chosen currency without exchange-rate conversion. Reset restores the example plan.
Formula and Explanation
Estimated total = sum of category estimates Recorded actual subtotal = sum of entered actual costs (blanks remain unknown) Estimated remaining = budget − reserve − estimated total Remaining after recorded actuals = budget − reserve − recorded actual subtotal Utilization = expense total ÷ budget × 100 (undefined for a zero budget)
The contingency reserve is held aside, not counted as an expense. It is subtracted once when calculating each remaining balance and excluded from spending totals and the estimated-category chart. With missing actual costs, the displayed actual subtotal and balance are provisional. With no actual entries, actual totals and balances are shown as not entered rather than confirmed zero. Money is summed in integer cents; supported currencies use two decimal places.
The default estimates demonstrate the arithmetic and are not market quotes, recommended allocations or predictions. Track consistent totals and avoid entering the same payment under multiple categories. Include applicable costs in your own estimates; the calculator does not automatically add tax, fees or currency conversion. Data stays in this page session and is not saved after reload.
Worked Example
A 10,000 budget with a 500 reserve and 9,000 estimated expenses leaves 500 available after the plan and reserve. Estimated expense utilization is 90%. If only a 1,000 venue actual cost is recorded, the recorded subtotal is 1,000 and provisional remaining is 8,500, with eight actual category costs still unknown. This is not an 8,500 final saving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a blank actual cost mean zero?
No. Blank means unknown or not recorded. The calculator shows how many actual costs remain missing. Enter 0 explicitly only for a category you have confirmed has no expense.
Is the contingency reserve counted twice?
No. It is excluded from estimated and recorded expense totals and subtracted once from each remaining balance. The visual breakdown shows estimated expenses only.
What happens with a zero total budget?
Expense totals and signed remaining balances still calculate. Utilization percentages are shown as undefined because division by zero is not meaningful. Any expenses or reserve can produce an over-budget warning.
Does changing currency convert my costs or save the plan?
No. It changes formatting/labels for the same numbers without exchange rates. The planner uses page memory only; copy your records elsewhere before closing or reloading.
