Anniversary Calculator

Calculate calendar time together, anniversary countdowns and selected milestones using local dates and a stated February 29 convention.

Uses local calendar dates. February 29 becomes February 28 in non-leap years. A next anniversary today has a zero-day countdown; the original start date is not the first anniversary.

How to Use the Anniversary Calculator

Enter the relationship or anniversary start date. Optionally add a title and target date; a blank target means today on your device. Choose a milestone to inspect. Results update immediately, and Copy result copies the displayed summary. Reset restores the sample start date with today as the target.

Formula and Explanation

Elapsed calendar months = largest n where start + n months ≤ target
Years = floor(elapsed calendar months / 12)
Remaining months = elapsed calendar months mod 12
Remaining days = calendar-day difference from the monthly anchor
Total days = Gregorian calendar-day difference (target − start)
Countdown = calendar-day difference (next anniversary − target)

Calendar month additions always use the original start day, clamping to the last available day when necessary. January 31 plus one month becomes February’s last day, then two months becomes March 31. February 29 anniversaries use February 28 in non-leap years and February 29 in leap years. Gregorian day numbers avoid timestamp and daylight-saving errors. No year is approximated as 365 days and no month as 30 days. Historical dates use the proleptic Gregorian calendar, not regional historical calendar-change rules.

Next anniversary includes today when an anniversary falls on the target date, so its countdown is zero. On the original start day, the first anniversary is one calendar year ahead. The target date can be future or historical, but the start cannot be later than it. Supported years are 0001–9999; a next date beyond that range is shown as unavailable. Listed milestones stop at 50 years; a selected past milestone remains visible with days since. Calendar elapsed-time components follow the original-day anchor convention and may differ from other conventions at month ends. No universal gift-theme claims are made.

Worked Example

From June 15, 2016 to June 15, 2026: 10 years, 0 months and 0 days; 3,652 total days; 10 completed anniversaries. The next anniversary is today, Monday June 15, with zero days remaining. For a February 29, 2020 start and February 28, 2021 target, the first anniversary occurs on February 28 under this tool’s convention, after 365 calendar days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to a February 29 anniversary?

It falls on February 28 in non-leap years and February 29 in leap years. This is the calculator’s explicit convention, not a legal or universal anniversary rule.

Why are total days not years multiplied by 365?

Real calendar years include leap days and months have different lengths. The calculator counts Gregorian calendar days directly, without assuming a fixed duration for a year or month.

Does next anniversary include an anniversary today?

Yes. On an anniversary date the countdown is zero and that year is already completed. On the original start date itself, the first anniversary remains a year away.

Can I calculate an anniversary in the past or future?

Yes. Enter the target date you want to compare with the start date. A blank target uses your device’s current local date; it does not use a UTC date or a timestamp-based day count.
