Dog Calorie Calculator

Estimate a healthy dog’s daily energy needs using resting energy and a documented, species-specific factor, with optional meal and food-portion calculations.

A starting estimate, not a feeding prescription. One factor is selected; factors are never stacked. Food portions assume this food supplies all calories. Changing weight units converts both weight fields.

How to Use the Dog Calorie Calculator

Enter current weight in kilograms or pounds, life stage, neuter status and activity. For a puppy, select under four months or four months and older while still growing. Choose a goal and one, two or three meals. Optional food energy must match its label unit. Results update immediately; Reset restores the example. Switching weight units converts both current and ideal weight, preserving their physical values.

Formula and Explanation

Current-weight RER (kcal/day) = 70 × weight in kg^0.75
Daily calories = calculation-weight RER × ONE selected factor
Calories per meal = daily calories / number of meals
Cups or cans per day = daily calories / kcal per cup or can
Grams per day = daily calories / kcal per 100 g × 100
1 lb = 0.45359237 kg

Adult moderate-activity dogs use 1.6 when neutered or 1.8 when intact (Merck). Low activity uses AAHA’s inactive-range upper endpoint, 1.2; high activity means light work and uses its 2.0 endpoint. These replace, rather than multiply, the neuter factor. Puppy growth uses 3 under four months and 2 from four months while still growing. The four-month boundary follows AAHA explicitly. Senior mode uses the adult selection without an automatic age reduction. These are starting choices within published guidance, not measurements of an individual animal’s needs.

Weight loss requires confirmation of veterinary guidance and a veterinary-established ideal weight below current weight. Its single AAHA factor is 1.0 for dogs applied to ideal-weight RER; current-weight RER is displayed separately. Weight gain requires a veterinarian-provided RER factor on current weight; no universal gain factor is supplied. Growth weight-management is excluded. Pregnancy, lactation, disease, refeeding and neonatal feeding need individualized plans. Food quantities assume all calories come from the selected food; account for treats and other food first. Calories round only for display. Software limits are 0.05–150 kg, gain factors greater than 1 through 5, and food density over 0 through 10,000 kcal per selected unit; these limits are not clinical recommendations.

Worked Example

For a 10 kg neutered adult dog at moderate activity, RER is about 393.64 kcal/day. Multiplying by 1.6 gives 629.82, displayed as 630 kcal/day. Two equal meals are about 315 kcal each. At 350 kcal/cup, the full daily estimate is about 1.80 cups; at 350 kcal/100 g it is about 179.95 g. A 20 kg dog has RER about 662.02 kcal/day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does low or high activity replace neuter status?

The calculator selects one applicable reference factor. Low activity uses the inactive estimate; high uses a light-work estimate. It does not multiply these by a neuter factor, which would create an unsupported combination.

How do puppies and seniors differ?

Weaned puppies use age-banded growth factors. Senior dogs retain the chosen adult factor as a starting comparison, with no universal senior reduction; health and body condition determine adjustments.

Can this calculate a weight-loss or weight-gain plan?

It can display a veterinarian-guided starting estimate. Loss requires veterinary ideal weight; gain requires a factor provided by your veterinarian. It cannot establish ideal weight, diagnose disease or replace follow-up.

Can I feed exactly the displayed number of cups?

The portion is arithmetic using the label’s calorie density and assumes that food supplies all calories. Include treats and other food, check weight trends, and adjust with veterinary guidance. Display rounding is not feeding precision.
