Walking Time Calculator

Estimate walking duration, pace and an optional arrival time from distance, speed and planned breaks.

Presets are editable planning examples. Arrival uses wall-clock arithmetic without time-zone or daylight-saving adjustments.

How to Use the Walking Time Calculator

Enter distance in kilometers or miles and speed in km/h or mph. Choose a slow, average or brisk preset as an editable starting assumption, or enter your own speed. Add total break minutes if needed. An optional start date and time gives an arrival clock time and date. Reset restores the sample walk.

Formula and Explanation

1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers
Walking hours = distance in kilometers / speed in km/h
Total minutes = walking hours × 60 + break minutes
Pace (min/km) = 60 / speed in km/h
Pace (min/mile) = pace (min/km) × 1.609344

Distance and speed units are converted independently so mixed units are supported. Slow, average and brisk presets use 3, 5 and 6 km/h respectively as planning examples. Break time is added once and is excluded from walking pace. Duration displays total hours without wrapping at 24. Arrival is the entered local clock time plus elapsed minutes, with date rollover.

Terrain, elevation, weather, fitness, traffic and route finding affect actual speed. Presets are examples, not individual performance estimates. Arrival uses simple wall-clock arithmetic without time-zone or daylight-saving adjustments. Enter a date and time in one local clock system; for a DST transition, account for the clock change separately. Duration is rounded to the nearest minute; arrival retains minutes. Extremely long or tiny-speed results beyond 100 years are rejected.

Worked Example

A 5 km walk at 5 km/h takes one hour. Add a 15-minute break for 1 hour 15 minutes total. Starting at 23:30 on January 1 arrives at 00:45 on January 2. A 2.5-mile walk at 2.5 mph also takes one hour; its walking pace is 24 minutes per mile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are breaks included in the displayed pace?

No. Pace describes moving time per distance unit. Total duration and arrival include the additional break minutes.

Can distance and speed use different units?

Yes. For example, enter miles with km/h. Both quantities are converted internally using 1 mile = 1.609344 km.

Will a walk longer than a day wrap to zero hours?

No. A 30-hour duration stays 30 hours. The arrival date advances separately when a start date and time are supplied.

Do arrival times account for daylight saving?

No. They use the entered wall clock and ordinary date rollover. Time-zone and DST clock changes require a separate adjustment.
