Paver Calculator

Estimate pavers for rectangular patio areas, along with base gravel and bedding sand volumes. Include joint spacing and separate paver waste from base materials.

Patio areas (feet)

Area-based paver estimate, not an exact cutting layout. Paver waste is not applied to gravel or sand. Compaction and delivery allowances are separate.

How to Use the Paver Calculator

Add nonoverlapping patio rectangles measured in feet. Enter paver length, width and joint spacing in inches. Set paver waste, gravel base depth and bedding sand depth. Optional prices are per paver or per cubic yard of each base material.

Formula and Explanation

Total area (sq ft) = Σ(patio length × width)
Effective paver coverage (sq ft) = (paver length + joint) × (paver width + joint) / 144
Raw paver estimate = total area / effective coverage
Purchase pavers = ceil(raw estimate × (1 + paver waste / 100))
Base or sand cubic feet = total area × material depth (in) / 12
Cubic yards = cubic feet / 27

The effective module includes one joint spacing in each paver dimension. This is an area-based estimate, not an exact cutting layout or perimeter-joint count. The purchase count applies waste to the unrounded paver estimate and rounds up once. Gravel and sand volumes use area and depth only: paver waste is not added to them. The material subtotal includes only prices you enter.

Edge cuts, laying patterns, product tolerances, perimeter joints, curves and irregular shapes change quantities. Waste here covers pavers only. Base and bedding depths must come from the project specification; loose delivery volume, compaction and minimum orders need separate supplier allowances. No excavation, labor, restraints, delivery or tax is included. Do not overlap areas when adding multiple rectangles.

Worked Example

A 12 × 12 ft patio has 144 sq ft. With 11.5 × 11.5-inch pavers and 0.5-inch joints, each effective module is 12 × 12 inches, or 1 sq ft. The base estimate is 144 pavers; 10% waste rounds 158.4 up to 159. A 4-inch gravel base needs 48 cu ft (1.778 cu yd); a 1-inch sand bed needs 12 cu ft (0.444 cu yd). At $2 per paver, $45/cu yd gravel and $30/cu yd sand, the subtotal is about $411.33.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does joint spacing affect the paver count?

Joint spacing increases the effective module in both directions, so the same area uses fewer modules. The area model approximates repeating joints and does not exactly model the patio perimeter.

Does 10% waste also increase gravel and sand?

No. The waste field applies only to pavers. Base gravel and bedding sand use their own depths without an automatic waste or compaction multiplier.

Why can an exact layout use a different number?

An area estimate ignores individual edge cuts, orientation and pattern repeats. Produce a cutting layout and check manufacturer installation guidance before placing an order.

Can I estimate several patios together?

Yes. Add nonoverlapping rectangles that use the same paver module and material depths. Calculate areas with different pavers, depths or prices separately.
