How to Use the Lawn Fertilizer Calculator
Enter lawn area in square feet or square meters. Copy the label’s N-P-K analysis, select a target nitrogen rate in lb N per 1,000 sq ft or g N per square meter, and enter bag weight in pounds or kilograms. Optional price is per bag. The default rate is an arithmetic example, not a recommendation for your lawn.
Formula and Explanation
Nitrogen fraction = N percentage ÷ 100 Nitrogen (lb) = area (sq ft) ÷ 1000 × target lb N / 1000 sq ft Product (lb) = nitrogen ÷ nitrogen fraction Bags = ceil(product weight ÷ bag weight) 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m²; 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg
The first label number is nitrogen by weight. The second and third are phosphate (P₂O₅) and potash (K₂O), not elemental P and K percentages. They are recorded for label checking but do not change the nitrogen-based product calculation. Metric rate uses grams of actual nitrogen per square meter. Bags are a purchase quantity; apply the calculated product weight rather than emptying every purchased bag.
Rates vary by turf species, season, soil test, product instructions and local restrictions. This tool does not prescribe a universally safe dose, annual program or spreader setting. It is a weight-based estimate for bagged fertilizer, not a liquid-volume or release-timing model. A zero-nitrogen product cannot meet a nitrogen target.
Worked Example
For 5,000 sq ft at 0.5 lb N per 1,000 sq ft, nitrogen needed is 2.5 lb. A 20-0-10 product is 20% nitrogen, so use 12.5 lb of fertilizer, or 2.5 lb product per 1,000 sq ft. With 10 lb bags, purchase 2 bags; at $20 each the purchase cost is $40. Do not apply all 20 lb simply because two bags were purchased.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which N-P-K number determines the amount?
The first number gives percent nitrogen by weight. A 20% N product contains 0.2 lb nitrogen per pound of product; divide required nitrogen by 0.2.
What metric rate should I enter?
Use grams of actual nitrogen per square meter. One lb N per 1,000 sq ft equals approximately 4.88243 g N per m²; do not enter kilograms or grams of fertilizer as the nitrogen rate.
Should I spread all the rounded bags?
No. Bag rounding is for purchasing. Weigh the calculated fertilizer amount; surplus product does not increase the chosen application rate.
Is the example rate suitable for every lawn?
No. Confirm species, season, soil-test needs, label instructions and local restrictions before choosing a nitrogen rate. The example is only a calculation demonstration.
