Insulation Calculator

Use this Insulation Calculator to estimate packages for a wall, ceiling or attic using measured area and the selected product’s coverage.

R-13 is an example, not a recommendation. Coverage must match your product and R-value; floor area alone cannot determine loose-fill bags.

How to Use the Insulation Calculator

Select the project and enter length × width or direct square feet. Deduct openings only for walls. Enter your chosen target R-value and the package coverage for that R-value, product and installation. For loose fill, confirm that the coverage comes from the manufacturer’s selected-R-value chart. Add waste and an optional package price.

Formula and Explanation

Net area = gross area − wall openings
Purchase coverage = net area × (1 + waste / 100)
Packages = ceil(purchase coverage ÷ coverage per package)
Cost = whole packages × package price

R-value describes resistance to heat flow, while square-foot coverage describes how much surface a package insulates under its rated conditions. The target R-value is recorded for product selection; it is not used as an invented area multiplier. For loose fill, use coverage at the specified R-value and follow the label’s depth and minimum installed-weight requirements.

There is no universal R-value recommendation here. Select a product suited to the assembly, cavity depth, climate and applicable requirements. This estimate does not model compressed batts, thermal bridges, existing insulation, air sealing, vapor control, energy savings or installed depth. Do not reuse a loose-fill coverage figure after changing R-value without checking the label.

Worked Example

For a 20 × 10 ft wall, subtract 20 sq ft of openings to get 180 sq ft. A 10% allowance gives 198 sq ft. If the chosen product covers 40 sq ft per package at the selected R-value, buy 5 packages. At $30 each, estimated material cost is $150.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does entering a higher R-value automatically increase bags?

No. Package coverage must come from the chosen product at that R-value. Change coverage when the manufacturer’s chart requires it; area alone cannot determine loose-fill bags.

Can I subtract attic or ceiling openings?

This interface provides opening deductions for wall projects only. For a ceiling or attic, enter the actual area to be insulated directly if exclusions apply.

Why round packages up?

Insulation is generally purchased in whole packages. Waste is added to net area once, then the coverage division is rounded upward.

How do I choose a suitable R-value?

Check the assembly and climate guidance relevant to your location and the product’s installation requirements. Cavity depth and moisture details matter; the calculator does not approve a building design.
