How to Use the Dimensional Weight Calculator
Enter package dimensions in inches or centimeters and actual weight in pounds or kilograms. Choose an illustrative divisor preset or edit the divisor and its unit basis. Results use the weight unit tied to that basis. Optionally enter a positive billing increment in the result unit to round the greater weight up.
Formula and Explanation
Convert each dimension into the divisor’s length unit Dimensional weight = length × width × height / divisor Compared weight = max(actual weight in result units, dimensional weight) Optional billable weight = ceil(compared weight / billing increment) × billing increment 1 inch = 2.54 cm; 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg
An in³/lb divisor produces pounds; a cm³/kg divisor produces kilograms. Dimension and actual-weight inputs are converted to those units before comparison, so an imperial divisor is never applied directly to centimeter measurements. Presets 139 or 166 in³/lb and 5,000 or 6,000 cm³/kg are examples, not guaranteed current carrier policies. Optional rounding is applied once to the greater unrounded weight; no per-dimension carrier rounding is assumed.
Carrier, service, contract, package shape, dimension rounding, minimum charges and divisor rules vary. This tool does not quote a rate or verify a carrier policy. It uses the dimensions as entered and does not round each side, add surcharges or account for special packaging. A zero actual weight can be used for a dimensional-only estimate, but a real shipment needs measured packed weight. Confirm the billed result with the carrier.
Worked Example
A 20 × 16 × 12-inch package has 3,840 cubic inches. With an illustrative 139 in³/lb divisor, dimensional weight is about 27.626 lb. Actual weight of 20 lb is lower, so the compared weight is 27.626 lb; a 1 lb billing increment gives 28 lb. In a separate metric example, 50 × 40 × 30 cm divided by 5,000 cm³/kg gives 12 kg.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a divisor have units?
The divisor converts cubic dimensions into weight. A value labeled in³/lb belongs with cubic inches and produces pounds; cm³/kg belongs with cubic centimeters and produces kilograms. The calculator converts inputs into that basis first.
Can I mix centimeter dimensions and pound weight?
Yes. The calculator converts dimensions and actual weight to the selected divisor basis before comparing them. The result unit is displayed beside the divisor and throughout the breakdown.
Do the example divisors guarantee my carrier’s policy?
No. They are illustrative presets only. Confirm the correct divisor and measurement rules for your service, region and contract, then edit the value or basis as needed.
How is optional billable-weight rounding applied?
The calculator first takes the greater of unrounded actual and dimensional weight. It then rounds that weight up to the configured positive increment, such as 1 lb or 0.5 kg. It does not implement every carrier’s dimension or billing rules.
