How to Use the Deck Board Calculator

Enter deck dimensions in feet, actual board width and gap in inches, and stock board length in feet. Select whether boards run along deck length or width. Set waste and optionally enter a unit board price.

Formula and Explanation

Rows = ceil((cross-deck span × 12 + gap) / (actual board width + gap))
Boards per row = ceil(board run / stock board length)
Base boards = rows × boards per row
Purchase boards = ceil(base boards × (1 + waste / 100))

For n rows, coverage is n board widths plus n − 1 gaps. A final row can be ripped narrower. Each row independently rounds up its stock boards; offcuts are not assumed reusable in other rows. Orientation swaps the running and cross-deck dimensions.

Enter actual width, not nominal lumber size: a nominal 6-inch product may have a different actual width. Confirm dimensions and spacing with the manufacturer. Layout, staggered joints, end gaps, perimeter details, framing, offcuts and deck shape affect quantities. The estimate does not establish safe joint support or structural design and is not a cutting plan.

Worked Example

For a 12 × 10 ft deck with boards along the 12 ft length, actual width 5.5 inches and a 0.25 inch gap: ceil(120.25 / 5.75) gives 21 rows. With 8 ft stock, each row uses two boards, so the base is 42. Adding 10% waste rounds 46.2 up to 47 boards. At $15 each, material cost is $705.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use nominal or actual board width?

Use the measured or manufacturer-stated installed board width. Nominal lumber sizes are product names and may differ from the actual dimensions.

Are leftover board pieces reused?

No. Each row rounds up independently. Reusing offcuts requires a separate cutting plan and suitable framing and joint locations.

Why does board orientation change the result?

Orientation changes both the row span and the length of each run. Whole-board rounding can therefore change the total even though deck area is unchanged.

Does this include framing and fasteners?

No. Results cover field deck boards only. Framing, fasteners, fascia, stairs, picture-frame borders and structural requirements must be planned separately.
